Hepatitis B VACCINE

The Hepatitis B vaccine is a critical tool in preventing Hepatitis B, a significant viral infection that primarily affects the liver. Understanding the vaccine schedule, its safety, and side effects is essential for effective prevention.

Understanding Hepatitis B

  • Prevalence in India: Between 1.6% to 4% of the population carries the Hepatitis B virus.

  • Impact: Can range from being a symptomless carrier to causing acute jaundice, chronic liver damage, and liver cancer.

Modes of Transmission

Vertical Transmission: From an infected mother to her newborn.
Contact with Infected Individuals: Through shared personal items like toothbrushes and razors.
Sexual Transmission: Via sexual contact with an infected partner.

Prevention through Vaccination

Efficacy: The Hepatitis B vaccine is highly effective in preventing the infection.

Vaccine Schedule

Newborns: First dose within 24 hours of birth.
Infants: Additional doses at 6, 10, and 14 weeks, combined with other vaccines.
Older Children and Adults: Schedule is 0-1 month-6 months.
Boosters: Not required as the initial doses provide almost lifelong protection.

Special Schedule for High-Risk Newborns

For newborns with Hepatitis B positive mothers: Immediate administration of Hepatitis B Immunoglobulin (HBIG) after birth, followed by the regular vaccine schedule.

Vaccine Safety and Side Effects

Common Side Effects: Soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site; fever, irritability in infants, mild tiredness.
Serious Side Effects (Rare): Severe allergic reactions (Anaphylaxis), high fever, behavior changes, severe pain and swelling of the limb where the vaccine was given.
When to Call the Doctor: For any severe symptoms or persistent severe symptoms.
