Hepatitis A Vaccine

The Hepatitis A vaccine is recommended by the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) to prevent Hepatitis A, a liver disease caused by the Hepatitis A virus (HAV). This virus is primarily transmitted through the fecal-oral route, either through person-to-person contact or consumption of contaminated food or water. Here’s an overview of the IAP guidelines for the Hepatitis A vaccine:

Understanding Hepatitis A

  • Disease Overview: Hepatitis A causes liver inflammation, leading to symptoms like fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, clay-colored stools, joint pain, and jaundice.

  • Transmission: Mainly through the fecal-oral route; common in areas with inadequate sanitation.

Types of Vaccines: Inactivated Hepatitis A vaccine and live attenuated vaccine are available.

IAP Recommended Schedule for Hepatitis A Vaccination

Primary Vaccination:

– Live Attenuated Vaccine: Single dose after the age of 1 year.
Catch-up Vaccination:

Vaccine Administration

Method: The vaccine is administered as an intramuscular injection.

Safety and Side Effects

Common Side Effects: Pain at the injection site, headache, and low-grade fever.
Serious Side Effects: Extremely rare, but can include allergic reactions.

Importance in Public Health

Vaccination against Hepatitis A is crucial in preventing outbreaks, especially in areas with poor sanitation.

Who Should Receive the Vaccine

Target Group: Recommended for all children aged 1 year and older.
High-Risk Groups: Children living in or traveling to areas with high rates of Hepatitis A, children with chronic liver disease, and those with clotting-factor disorders.
